My work is influenced by my 20-year career in environmental policy, and more than half of my lifetime spent living in cities - Washington, London, Boston, Pune (India), and then back to DC.
Given this background I think about things like the fact that for the first time in history, the majority of the world's population lives in cities, with urban areas growing by 50+ million people annually (Source: World Health Organization) - and implications this has for the natural environment and how we experience it. More and more people are encountering nature from a very human-constructed landscape. So with my camera I explore how society integrates the natural environment in an urban context. How do we fit nature into our increasingly urban world? Do we ignore it; include it for visual harmony where feasible; or consider it a crucial part of the modern urban landscape? How does nature survive in the city?
My images show the urbanized nature around me: trees neatly edged by sidewalks; rivers contending with trash, their ebbs and flows routed into predictable paths; birds splashing in fountains; fall foliage on asphalt; winter berries against concrete; nature landscaped into plots. I photograph the beauty of nature as found in the city.
As a city-dweller, I also love to see how people express their individuality in a concrete, brick world. With my camera I explore the role that form - and most recently, color - hold in human expression in urban life. A new obsession with color led to my "DC in Color" project, to which I continue to add regularly, every chance I get. Many of these images are on this website; I also regularly post even more of them, one color at a time, on Instagram @rinamrodriguez.
